The TVA Building, located at 400 West Summit Hill Drive, is the tallest skyscraper in downtown Knoxville. Proudly standing thirteen stories tall, the building houses a variety of businesses, including the headquarters for the Tennessee Valley Authority.

In 2021, when it was time for a new roof, the TVA contacted our Knoxville team of commercial roofing contractors to handle the job. We were excited to assist in preserving the original and historical look of the building while providing it with a brand new, reliable roof.

The TVA Building has a unique and challenging roofline spanning 20,100 square feet. Our commercial roofing crew had to carefully and meticulously install the new roof, taking care not to damage the architectural integrity of the building.

The old roof was in such disrepair that the only solution was to remove and replace the entire system. Our commercial roofing inspectors determined that a modified bitumen roofing system would be the best option for the TVA Building.

A commercially modified bitumen roofing system is a built-up roofing method comprising many layers of asphalt-impregnated felt or glass fiber matting, then topped with asphalt or coal tar pitch coating. This roofing system is extremely durable and can withstand high winds and heavy rains.

Our commercial roofers worked on demolishing the existing curbs and replacing them with new metal edges. We also replaced the perimeter scuppers to ensure proper drainage.

It was essential to the TVA that their new roof be as energy-efficient as possible. Our team installed a white reflecting membrane on top of the roof to meet this goal, helping to keep the building cooler in the summer by reflecting the sun.

The high altitude made it a logistically challenging project, but our highly skilled roofers used cranes to move roofing materials and equipment to the roof with ease. Safety is the number one priority in any project as large as this one. Our roofers followed all OSHA safety regulations and a strict safety plan.

With high-tech safety gear and years of experience in roofing projects, we could work quickly and efficiently to get the job done on time and without incident. The new modified roof is designed to withstand high winds and heavy rains and last up to 30 years with proper maintenance.
